The appreciation of art in our world has been so underrated over the years. Imagine a world without art. It would be anything less than a world without communication and justice. Art documents our history, challenges our present and informs our future.
Today if you ask most humans on the surface of this planet on their thought about art and what they feel towards it, all they are going to say is that art is nature, art is beautiful and art is lovely but not everyone knows that art is humanity and art is life.
Art can be perceived to be human’s effort to imitate, supplement, alter or counteract the work of nature. Art is the conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colours, forms, movements or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of beauty.
Growing up as a kid I ever thought art was only all about deeping a brush into a palette and painting on a board or maybe drawing objects using pencils. Not until I grew up being matured and started studying things differently. I started asking myself why things exist the way they are and started even thinking beyond what they exist to be. Each time I see the clouds at day and at night I see beyond what it seems to be. I see art! I see an unending repetition of movement. I could connect my mind to the clouds by creating images that I alone could perceive and translate. I guess you’ve once been a victim. Art is nothing but creativity.
Kurt Vonnegut - a famous American writer (1922-2007) said “To practice any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow”.
For me, art is a living thing, art sends a message, art could be a reminder, and art could be loved and cherished. I don’t know how you feel whenever you encounter art but as for me I could perceive art and be relieved.
Art makes man happy. Without art there wouldn't be a happy world. It is also important to know that the misic we listen to is another form of art that pleases the human mind.
Art could be beyond beauty, everyone thinks at all times art must be beautiful and pretty but the truth is that you could see an ugly object or rather an ugly being and ask yourself a few question like: why is this thing so ugly? Why is this part so shaped like this? Why is it different from others? Upon your own thought you may have condemned art but the truth is that you have spent time trying to analyze and appreciate art.
Art is so neutral and plane. It presents to you simply what it seems to be. It doesn’t camouflage its personality. It’s as real as life.
“Art speaks”. It depends on how hard it hits you by heart or how best it translates itself to you. Sometimes when an ugly being in our environment, we start asking questions like- where were you when God was creating every other human being? This sounds sarcastic right? At least it (art) reminds you that there is a God.
Having said this, it never gets done on us that whether directly or indirectly we have appreciated art in one way or the other. To buttress my point further, here is an example below:
Not everyone will appreciate this piece of work but do you believe that there are some humans that exist in this world who could lay down some dollar bills just to purchase this piece of art?
There are some kind of art that doesn’t make sense to the human mind but they are quite pretty. There are also some pieces of work that could be beautiful but makes no sense to some other set of humans. Can you imagine?
You don’t only judge art by its looks but by the star it shoots to your heart. The art that interprets loyalty to me may interpret negligence to you. Art speaks to you what the ears in your heart deserves.
ART AS A MESSENGER
It is most necessary to know that “art could be a messenger”. Art sends a message to the human heart; art speaks. It tells us of the things that haven’t been previously perceived in the heart.
The power of art can be so amazing and unbearable to the extent that it could also remind us of our dead memories and breathe life into them again.
Take a pretty inner look at the picture above. Were you able to translate it?
I know you felt something pricky in your heart after viewing the image . How best could you describe slavery, colonization, agony and force labour? Nothing more than –“a piece of art”
ART AS A GOD
More also, art could also serve “as a god” to some people. In some part of the world, spirits are being invoked into various artistic objects and are being worshipped.
On the other hand, people just cherish art because they are beautiful and lovely. They hang it upon the walls in their living room or bedroom; adoration!. In one way or the other, we humans worship at. We all have a piece of art that we adore and appreciate.
ART SEDUCES
Art could also be “seductive”. It never stops being alluring and attractive to the human eyes. It has a way of embracing the attention of the human mind.
Have you ever walked into a gallery room and stare at a piece of work for about 15minutes? That’s simply the power of art. Whether an ugly piece of art work or a pretty one, art still seduces, strips you of your time and pays for your attention.
ART IS TRUTHFUL
Art presents to you nothing less than truthfulness. Art presents itself to you the way it is. It gives you the right message and response. It tells you of things not previously known.
I was surfing the Net when I encountered this amazing piece of art; A middle aged woman with her child being placed on her back while she works. All I could think of is Africa- the struggle and hard work.
The tear bag of a person who have once been a victim or agent of this kind of scenario during childhood will have no option that to burst open. This is the kind of love an African mother has for her child and her work.
MUSIC AS AN ART
Before placing some ink on these pages, I asked a random question among family and friends on how they feel towards art.
ART IS NATURAL
Art is known to be so natural. It doesn’t need any form of artificialities before it can present itself in its best form. Art calls a spade; a spade and a rod; a rod. Art could be man-made. Though sometimes various graphic designs are being made possible through the utilization of technology and gadget but the truth is that man has to be involved in one way or the other. Art needs to be connected with man so as to deliver the best. No matter the artificial tool or gadget you use to create any piece of art today, you will just want to make it look natural and pure so as to breathe life into it.
Art also possesses emotions and feelings. You could tell if it is sad one or a happy one. It doesn't camouflage.
ART AS A LOVER
Art could make you fall in love at any moment. It has a very unique way of stealing the human heart. It first seduces you of your consciousness and emotions then places you in between mixed feelings. Have you ever starred at an art work for minutes and you are like ; No! I'm not going to let you go any time soon? That's the power of art. It makes you loose your stamina and makes you fall in love
So, I urge you today to never underestimate the power of art in our world today. Pick up any piece of art and appreciate it today. Remember, “The art that brings peace to the human heart is the art that interprets best”
